SAN BERNARDINO — Two games into the 2013 season, and the Modesto Nuts already are hurting after two difficult losses.
The Nuts led on two occasions Friday night but still were beaten when the Inland Empire 66ers scored twice in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win.
Alex Yarbrough's 2-run double off William Rankin, following a pair of walks allowed by Nick Schnaitmann, cost Modesto the win. Juan Crousset singled with two outs in the ninth, but that was all.
Modesto's 22-year-old starter Chris Jensen went seven encouraging innings and allowed only two runs on four hits. The Nuts regained the lead 3-2 in the seventh on Ryan Casteel's solo home run, and Jordan Ribera later doubled and scored on a fielding error.
