INLAND EMPIRE — A gutsy comeback ended in Opening Night frustration for the Modesto Nuts.
Inland Empire sealed a 12-inning 5-4 victory Thursday night on Ryan Jones' third hit, a single to center which plated Andy Workman, who had singled and advanced on a sacrifice and a costly passed ball.
Former Cal State Stanislaus pitcher Eric Cendejas earned the win for Inland Empire.
Modesto rallied to a tie from a 4-0 deficit. Timothy Smalling's two-run double in the seventh drew the Nuts even, but they advanced only one runner to second base the rest of the game.
Modesto, paced by David Kandilas' four hits, outhit the 66ers 12-8 but went only 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
