CERES — Investigators have arrested two Ceres men on suspicion of attempted murder in last week's shooting of a man riding a bicycle, police said Wednesday.
Angel Martinez, 22, and Jarvis Stennis, 20, were taken into custody in connection with the Friday shooting on Darrah Street.
Ceres police spokesman Sgt. Jose Berber said that a 22-year-old man was on a bicycle when he rode past Martinez and Stennis.
Berber said that Martinez shot the man once in the back. He said the victim then jumped off his bicycle and ran toward an alley, where Martinez fired four or five more shots.
Stennis yelled, "Get him, get him," encouraging Martinez to shoot the man, Berber said.
The victim ran to his home and was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for nonlife-threatening wounds.
Ceres police detectives later identified Stennis and Martinez as suspects.
Berber said Stennis was taken into custody on the night of the shooting at an undisclosed location.
Martinez was arrested Tuesday at a home in the 2800 block of East Hatch Road. Officers surrounded the home, and after numerous announcements over a public address system, Martinez surrendered to officers without further incident.
Berber said that he was not aware of a specific motive in the shooting, but he said that the suspects and the victim knew each other.
Martinez and Stennis were being held at the Stanislaus County Jail on Wednesday night. Their bail was set at $500,000 each, according to jail records.
