If you want to see some of the area's top bowlers in action, the 17th annual Modesto USBC Masters at McHenry Bowl is the place to be this weekend.
The Masters guarantees a $3,000 first prize to the winner and pays 1-in-4 entrants. Qualifying squads will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (A Squad) and 4:30 p.m. (B Squad), and consists of seven games across 14 lanes.
The top 16 (if less than 95 entries) or 24 (if more than 95 entries) bowlers will return Sunday morning to roll in the two-game double elimination finals.
The A Squad is limited to 64 entries. Walk-ins are taken up to 15 minutes prior to squad starts, or call Wayne at (209) 524-9161 to hold a spot.
Four teams from McHenry Bowl made their way to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno for the USBC Open Championships this past weekend.
One bowler, Joe Smith, made quite a splash when he started his singles set with 17 straight strikes to post a 300 game followed by a 234. He finished out with a 193 to tally a 727 series.
Smith's 300 game was the fourth in the tournament, which runs through early June. Smith is a member of the Modesto Bowling Hall of Fame and works at Bowling Outfitters. Go to bowl.com to see an interview with him.
Betty Tull was the women's champ in the Swing into Spring No-tap tournament at McHenry with her 922 set. Beth Sims finished only two pins out with her 920 series to take second. Rolling into third was Freida Day, scoring a 912.
David Brown headed the men's list after posting an 899 score. Don Surdich and Bruce Gibbs ended in a tie for second with an 875. All three men scored a no-tap 300 game their second game.
June Brown is taking a squad of youth bowlers to the Nor Cal YBA State Championships this month. Doubles & Singles will travel to Fireside Lanes in Citrus Heights on April 13 and Team Event will hit Strikes Unlimited Bowl in Rocklin on April 20. If you are interested in bowling, call June at (209) 571-2695 for details.
The official 2013 USBC Book Average cutoff is in a little less than two weeks. If you have bowled 21 or more games in a sanctioned league as of April 15, you will be listed in the official average book for the 2012-13 season and on bowl.com.
If you have more than one average, the highest will be considered your book average. Book averages are used at the start of this summer and the following winter leagues, and in most city, state and national tournaments.
Scholarship money is available from the Modesto USBC and applications are at the local bowling centers. The deadline for the Modesto USBC Scholarships has been set for April 15.
The Hall of Fame Scholarship is awarded to youth bowlers who are graduating seniors this year. The award is based on their bowling record, scholastic aptitude and school involvement.
The second award is the Director's Scholarship. This award can be won multiple times between the ninth and 12th grades. It is open to children or grandchildren of current adult league bowlers.
This Sunday, ESPN will air the PBA League Elias Cut Finals at 10 a.m. The championships will be rolling at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. The PBA League is new this season and has already bowled five rounds of competition in conjunction with the PBA Tour tournaments. The league is made up of eight teams that were drafted from the PBA ranks.
