Atwater baseball cruises in tournament opener

Livingston hits, but unable to capitalize

April 1, 2013

— Tyler Zeller scattered seven hits over seven complete innings while striking out six to lead Atwater to a 7-2 victory over Livingston at Memorial Ballpark on the opening night of the 54th Annual Fran Oneto/Atwater-Winton Lions Easter Baseball Tournament.

The Wolves (8-6) built a 2-1 lead after three innings thanks in part to a solo home run from starting pitcher Sean Brunnelle, but Atwater answeredquickly.

The Falcons (9-5) scored two runs in the fourth inning to go on top 3-2 and then put the game away in the fifth inning.

Dalton Beatty got things going with a run-scoring single and Matt Parker followed with a 2-run base hit of his own as Atwater rallied for four runs.

Brunnelle struck out seven, but couldn't get any run support despite four of Livingston's seven hits going for extra bases.

Victor Tiscareno led Atwater with three hits and two runs scored. The Falcons will play Moreau Catholic tonight at 7 p.m. The Wolves will take on Minarets, which lost its tournament opener to San Leandro.

Merced 3, St. Mary's (Albany) 2

ATWATER -- Shawn Heath-Smith blasted a ball to center field for a walk-off single as Merced beat St. Mary's after squandering an early 2-0 lead.

Derek Alva got the rally started for the Bears (8-7) in the seventh inning, singling and stealing second. He moved up to third on a Sam Fuerte sacrifice bunt.

Matt Smith pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief to earn the win.

Merced will take on Moreau Catholic at 4 p.m. in the first of two games this evening for the Mariners.
