Just finished "Regional gang sweep was 10 months in the making" (March 22, Page A-1) and found it very unsettling.
The story starts out by scaring us to death with statistics declaring that 5,000 documented gang members and 5,000 undocumented gang members in 64 documented criminal gangs are living in Stanislaus County! Then it reports that the recent gang sweep took 10 months to plan. And they only arrested 14 people?
This is where I get confused: Are we supposed to feel relief that they arrested 14 people after 10 months? This just doesn't compute! To my way of thinking, that leaves 9,986 still out and about in our neighborhoods. At the rate of 14 every 10 months, let's see, how many years will that be?
Fourteen arrests somehow doesn't seem impressive.
