MODESTO — Thirty minutes before Tylor Crippen was stabbed to death in Creekwood Park, another young victim was robbed by the same suspects, police said Wednesday.
Jacob Segura, 18, Taylor Koplen, 17 and Juan Garcia, 16, are charged with murder and two counts of attempted robbery in connection with the attack on Crippen and his girlfriend, who were walking in Creekwood Park on Jan. 29. The criminal complaint against the defendants was amended Friday to reflect a third robbery victim.
The suspects are accused of attacking and robbing the 17-year-old victim of his cell phone at the park, said Modesto police Lt. Rick Armendariz. About 8:30 p.m., the suspects saw Crippen and his girlfriend with what appeared to be a cell phone and decided to rob them, too, according to statements in a search warrant. But when Crippen ran, the three suspects chased him down, and one stabbed him multiple times, according to the warrant.
Crippen and his girlfriend were not related to the 17-year-old victim, police said.
The first victim didn't come forward the night of the slaying, and Armendariz wouldn't say how police found him, but two cell phones were confiscated from Koplen's home, which was searched the night he was arrested.
Koplen is scheduled to appear in court today for a judge to hear arguments over whether he should remain incarcerated in Juvenile Hall or be transferred to the county jail next month when he turns 18.
All three of the defendants will return to court April 25 for another pretrial hearing.
