We need to vote on a half-penny sales tax to aid law enforcement and fire protection in Modesto. There are only local ways to handle our high crime problems.
We have had the highest car theft rates in the country, being in the top 10 for the last decade. Only local law enforcement can handle this, and they need more resources to do it and protect us. Residential crime and crimes against persons are more brazen and brutal as of late.
This proposed tax is only for a limited time. Everyone knows that taxes spent by local governments are the most efficient use of taxpayers' dollars. Let's put this on the ballot now.
The benefits would go to the whole Modesto community. The added fire protection part will help keep homeowners' and renters' insurance rates stable and may even lower them.
I do not think we will chase the gangsters out of town completely, or arrest our way out of crimes altogether, but we all know the value of a sound, well-trained and at-ready police department and what it means to our community.
