MODESTO — Local collegiate bowler Chris Davidson has earned a coveted berth into the United State Bolwing Congres' Intercollegiate Singles Championships. Davidson, with his Fresno State team, traveled to Las Vegas for one of the four season-ending college sectionals held around the country. Rolling in the singles event, Davidson came on strong in the sixth and final game to roll a 258 and move into second place with a 1,332.
The top four qualifiers earned a spot to the championships. The roster includes winners from the four sectionals the top 24 men and top 16 female collegiate bowlers in the country.
Davidson's Fresno State squad took third to make the cut to the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships running concurrently. The top four male and female teams from the four sectionals will compete in what is rated as the most prestigious collegiate bowling event. The tournament will be run April 16-20 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Neb.
The Modesto Youth City Tournament has released its official standings for the three-division tournament. Curtis Moffett leads the Scratch division with a 642 score. In the combined Junior/Major/Senior division, Nathaniel Mohr finished in the top spot with a handicapped score of 739. Julia Serrano finished at a close second with a 735.. Christian Garcia tallied a 724 for third place honors. Ashton Russell topped the Bantam/Prep division scoring a nice 773 for the title. Andrew White posted a 754 to claim second. In third, Haley Spani finished with a 752 series. Winners receive scholarship money for their efforts.
Good luck to the local BVL qualifiers representing Modesto on Saturday at the state finals at Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park. Qualifiers from the Men's division are Dwayne Hunter, Donnie Silva, Derek Tull, Bill Irby and Lance Stowe. Women qualifiers are Karen Brown, Janet Spooner, Crystal Walker, Ieko Click, Jean Rodrigues and Debbie Carreira.
Harold Vartikian scored a no-tap 300 game to help vault him to the top of the men's list in the 55 and Over No-Tap at Yosemite. He tallied an 897 for the win. Max Norris recorded an 846 set for second, followed by Frank Nuzzi's 829 third place score. Topping the women's side was Ann Zuidema at an 894. Jilie Evlestan was next in line with 886. Third place Claudelle Bonaccinie finished at an 882 total.
The team of Fritz Klatt, David Brown and Jay Faughn finished first in the Kegler Trio Tournament at McHenry with a 2,468 total. Placing second was the threesome of Ann Zuidema, Anja DeBoer and Eric Benz (2,403). Earl Purcell, Marion Roberts and Larry Barker teamed up for third place (2,342). Barker included a no-tap 300 in his efforts.
On Monday the Ladies Trio Team No-tap runs at McHenry starting at 9:30 a.m. The teams of three ladies are handicapped from 660. Check-in and potluck begins at 9 a.m.
If you thought you were too late to sign up for the State Tournaments, you've been given a reprieve. Entry deadlines for the 2013 Open Championships and Women's Championships have been extended until April 1. Entries are available at the bowl desks.
Modesto USBC Masters is quickly approaching. Competition will run the weekend of April 6-7 at McHenry Bowl. Qualifying squads will be held Saturday at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m.. The top 16 bowlers will return on Sunday for the match play final round. Call Wayne at 524-9161 to hold a spot.
