In response to the March 18 front page story "A Better Bridge?" concerning the McHenry Avenue bridge between Escalon and Modesto: I believe my idea is much cheaper and can be done by next weekend.
First, take out the four-way stop signs on McHenry and River Road. Paint a turning lane so people heading north can turn left onto River Road. People heading east on River Road can already merge to McHenry heading south. Folks on the east side of River Road can go through Riverbank to head south. People on the west side of River Road can take Sexton or Van Allen to get to Escalon. Problem solved.
The totally unnecessary four-way stop is the only problem affecting that bridge. After that, take out the stoplight at Del Rio and let the rich folks fend for themselves like every other subdivision in Stanislaus County. That stoplight is ridiculous!
Editor's Note: The public forum on the McHenry Avenue project is Wednesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Escalon Community Center, 1055 Escalon Ave. More info: www.stancounty.com/publicworks and click on engineering, then design and then projects.
