More than one-third of the Turlock Irrigation District's workers earned more than $100,000 in 2012, nearly all because of overtime paid to rank-and-file employees.
Of the the TID's 431 workers, 148 (34.4 percent) made more than $100,000 and 16 (3.7 percent) received more than $150,000.
By comparison, 116 (2 percent) of the Modesto Irrigation District's work force was paid more than $100,000, while 10 (2.5 percent) made more than $150,000.
Two retiring MID middle managers more than doubled their pay by cashing out accrued vacation and pay for overtime, compensatory time and sick time. Former generation manager Glenn Mount received $110,618 in cashouts and $35,382 in salary, and engineering manager Bill Ketscher added $109,150 in cashouts to his $71,639 in salary.
Most of the TID's 16 employees receiving more than $150,000 were blue-collar workers, including five linemen and five of their supervisors, all of whom relied heavily on overtime.
Most notable was a lineman who made nearly $77,000 in overtime in addition to his $96,148 salary for a total of more than $175,000. He and a line supervisor ($102,919 base salary plus $68,858 overtime for a total of more than $180,000) were paid more than the district's three assistant general managers: Larry Gilbertson, Brian Lafollette and James Farrar, each of whom made about $171,000.
The 10 MID employees making more than $150,000 included four dispatch supervisors, all of whom received more than $37,000 in overtime; one made more than $44,000 in overtime. The others were administrators.
Thirty-seven TID workers received more than $30,000 in overtime last year, including 20 line workers and seven technicians. By comparison, 10 MID employees were paid more than $30,000 in overtime.
The utilities' general managers topped their respective districts in pay. Former MID General Manager Allen Short, who retired at year's end, made $266,566, with $21,333 in cashouts added to his $245,233 salary, while Casey Hashimoto, the TID's general manager, was paid $205,068.
