MODESTO — Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson is aware of detailed crime statistics for the South Ninth and South Seventh streets area of south Modesto. In recent months, business owners in the unincorporated area have asked the Sheriff's Department for more protection and organized to find their own solutions.
The records for 2012 show that three motels, a trailer park and bar accounted for two-thirds of the 931 calls for law enforcement and emergency services. You read that right: two-thirds or 66 percent. Two motels each generated about 165 calls last year, including a homicide, numerous fights, drug violations, battery, trespassing, burglary, suspicious circumstances, parole violations, a fire and medical aid calls.
Christianson said his department is looking at strategies for holding motel owners responsible for not controlling illegal activity. One owner has said she can't watch her business 24/7 and has been a victim herself. South Ninth merchants have started an e-mail chain, are installing more lighting and started a security patrol.
