Kenny Smart is always smiling always and his smile is infectious.
He manages a heavy courseload of all Advanced Placement and honors classes, and he consistently maintains an above 4.0 grade point average. Kenny is junior class president. He is involved in Key Club, Interact Club and the Outdoor Club, which organizes fun Friday activities and trips to the beach.
Smart's true passion, however, is outside school. He plays year-round soccer for Turlock Earthquake Thunder, a top-ranked club team. He also kicks for his high school football team and was Western Athletic Conference second team kicker his sophomore year.
"I have a really strict planner that I follow," he says. "Every day I pretty much have my whole day planned out from when I wake up to when I go to sleep. I've given up a lot of social activities and I don't have a lot of free time, but that's OK because I have friends on my team I have some friends who I've been on the same team with since I was 10 or 11.
"I've been doing (soccer) since I was 4 or 5 ever since I started doing it, I fell in love with it," he says.
Last summer, Smart decided to share that love by organizing a soccer clinic at Chrysler Head Start.
"I was trying to think of ways to give back to the community, and I thought there was nothing better than combining something I really like soccer with helping out people in need," he says.
Smart got a local business, Pro Soccer, to discount shirts and soccer balls that he then donated to the school.
Smart plans to attend a four-year university after high school and hopes to one day start his own business, although he has not decided what kind of business.
"Looking forward to the future is what keeps me going every day," he says.
