SUCCESS & SERVICE: Stanislaus fair joins finalists for PR News award

The Stanislaus County Fair is a finalist in PR News' "Twitter: Marketing Campaign" category.

The list of finalists includes large companies such as American Airlines, the National Geographic Channel and Intersport. PR News is a nationally known public relations publication. It will give out awards in nine categories during a presentation April 17 in New York City.

Century 21 M&M and Associates, based in Modesto, was honored last week as the top company within the Century 21 brand nationwide for sales in 2012. The company, owned locally by John Melo, Larry Matos and Lauralee Ensign, closed 6,834 units last year. It has 28 offices and more than 1,250 agents in Northern California.

The American Animal Hospital Association recognized Modesto's Veterinary Medical Associates for being a fully accredited member for 50 years. Veterinarian Jeff Kahler, who writes a column for The Bee, accepted the award during a presentation Saturday in Arizona. The hospital opened in 1960.

Karen De Vaney of Modesto has been named Woman of the Year for the American Business Women's Association's Tuleburg Chapter based in Stockton. She has owned and operated her business since 1976, specializing in income tax, bookkeeping and payroll for individuals and small businesses.

HighCo, a landscaping firm in Modesto, volunteered its services along the Virginia Corridor Trail last week. Members of the firm worked in conjunction with the College Area Neighborhood Alliance and the city's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department to replace plants along the trail. The city provided the plants. HighCo and owner Jeremy High provided the crew and equipment.

Modesto City Schools announced its February honorees for its Heroes recognition program. They included:

George Gardner, the district's K-8 music chairman, recognized for his dedication to music instruction and his annual participation in MoBand, the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County.

David Houck, assistant principal at Elliott Alternative Education Center, for his communication skills and work to make the campus safer.

Jeannie Ramsey, principal's secretary at Elliott. During a time of transition and change at Elliott, Ramsey demonstrated great stability.

Anne MacMillan, who once worked for former Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, has been named one of the deputy chiefs of staff to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. She has moved up from the position of senior policy adviser and will oversee external affairs and policy management at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

MacMillan, originally from Sacramento, was Cardoza's legislative director and principal liaison to the House agriculture and resources committees. She also was a policy adviser to then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
