-- A clerk at a Modesto store exchanged gunfire with robbers Thursday night, police said.

The robbery was reported at 10:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Tully Road, according to Modesto Police Lt. Jeramy Young.

“Two suspects entered the store and took some items,” Young said. “The clerk followed them outside. One suspect pulled a gun and fired several shots at the clerk. The clerk also had a gun and fired.”

Nobody was injured in the incident, and the suspects got away. Young said detectives are investigating, but had no suspect information releasable to the public. He also said pulling a weapon or otherwise fighting back at a suspected robber or assailant is a bad idea.

“Obviously, we recommend people just observe and report, then let us take it from there,” he said. “We don’t want people to put themselves in a position of danger. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.”
