MODESTO -- The Modesto Junior College Pirates had risen from an early three-run deficit and had taken the lead Thursday afternoon against San Joaquin Delta.
MJC stood only three outs away from its first Big 8 Conference win. Then came the painful ninth.
The Pirates committed three infield errors, opening the door to five Delta runs and an 8-4 loss on the MJC diamond.
Modesto (7-9, 0-5) fell to the Mustangs (14-3, 4-1) for the second time in three days, with one more game left to play in the series Saturday in Stockton.
Run-scoring singles by Calvin McMiller and Marcus Mastrouboni put the final touches on the Delta ninth. The Pirates managed only a base runner in their half.
Earlier, Modesto began its comeback with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Gino Franceschetti (4 for 5) and a run-scoring groundout by Dan Carney.
The Pirates took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on a single by Carney (3 for 5), followed by Patrick Mulry's dash home on a wild pitch.
Men's Tennis
PIRATES WIN Modesto improved to 8-3 with an 8-0 non-league win over a shorthanded Mission team on the Pirates' courts. Austin Tay, Esteban Felix, Luis Velazquez and Freddie Matthews all captured singles victories.
The Pirates welcome Cosumnes River today.

MJC PLACES 3RD Long-hitting Ryan Jones shot a solid 2-over 74 at Woodland's Yolo Fliers to lead the Pirates to a third-place finish during the team's fifth Big 8 tournament. MJC recorded a 390, its second-lowest score of the season.
Michael Sturgis had a 78 and was one of four Pirates to break 80. Modesto trailed first-place Santa Rosa by 18 strokes. Folsom Lake took second.
