Printing bad letter is just as bad

March 14, 2013

It was disheartening to read the March 8 letter "Bible clearly defines marriage" from a self-identified Lutheran pastor (Missouri Synod) in which duly elected national and state leaders were disparaged with childish name-calling.

This religious leader encourages the reading of the Bible for guidance but it is clear that he does so in a very selective and limited manner, using it to justify his prejudices and ignoring the many passages which address his own unacceptable behaviors.

As disappointing as was this letter, worse still was the Bee's lack of editorial discretion in printing the letter, thereby exacerbating a low level of discourse.

The Bee and the pastor have a responsibility to show greater civic responsibility.
