Two free training programs will be offered this spring to help Stanislaus County residents learn skills needed to get jobs in construction trades and at Amazon's new distribution center.

Pre-apprenticeship training for the building trades will be provided in Modesto for people considering careers as plumbers, electricians and sheet metal workers.

The taxpayer-funded training will be offered by trade unions and will include 120 hours of instruction during three weeks in May. Worker safety, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid, blueprint reading, math skills, tools and materials, and interviewing skills will be taught.

That training is designed to help people pass the exams needed to get jobs in trade union apprenticeship programs.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18, be high school graduates, have valid California driver's licenses and reliable transportation, be legal U.S. residents, take a WorkKeys exam and pass a drug screening.

About 20 people will be accepted into the pre-apprenticeship program. Those interested in applying must call the Alliance Worknet at (209) 558-7847 by March 24.

Training is planned for more than 200 people who are interested in working at the Amazon distribution center. That Patterson facility is scheduled to open this summer.

The free training program will help people prepare for careers in warehousing, logistics and distribution. It will cover topics such as supply chain control, warehouse processes and material handling.

Modesto Junior College instructors will provide the training.

Exactly where and when the Amazon-focused program will be taught has not been set, but sign-ups have started.

To get on the warehousing and logistical training list, call the Alliance Worknet at (209) 558-7751.

Amazon is expected to start hiring workers in June. Patterson has distribution centers operating for Kohl's, CVS, W.W. Grainger and auto parts manufacturer Affinia.
