-- A 74-year-old woman suffered a broken hip and other injuries after she was robbed of her purse in front of Modesto's Burlington Coat Factory.

The woman was leaving the store at 2001 McHenry Ave. Sunday afternoon when a man approached her from behind, said Lt. Rick Armendariz of the Modesto Police Department.

The man, who witnesses say was in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 10 inches and weighing about 140 pounds, snatched the purse, which she had over her shoulder. In the process, the man pushed the woman to the ground.

He then ran south to Bowen Avenue to a waiting silver four-door compact car. There possibly were three other men in the car, witnesses said.

The woman was taken to a hospital and treated for her injuries.

The suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, tan shorts and black socks, witnesses said.

Authorities ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Tipsters can email tips at www.modestopolice.com/ CrimeStoppers, or text them to CRIMES (274637) by typing "Tip704" plus the message.
