-- The Modesto Christian girls closed the first half on an 8-2 run and scored the first basket of the second half to draw within eight points of host Enterprise, but that was as close as the Crusaders would come as the Hornets pulled away for a 43-29 win in second-round action of the CIF State Division III Basketball Championships at Manatowa Gymnasium.

The only lead for Modesto Christian (22-10) came at 2-0, then Enterprise (29-1) closed out the first period on a 13-2 run due to cold shooting by the Crusaders and dominating defense by the Hornets.

"There were two big things we didn't do," Modesto Christian coach Robb Spenser said. "Make baskets and rebound.

"Not rebounding has been a problem of ours all year. We talked about it and we stressed about it, but when you don't rebound and you don't make shots, that puts you at a disadvantage."

Two baskets on that late-first-half run by the Crusaders came on outstanding no-look passes from Ashley Lucas underneath to Jasmine Hampton.

"We started out kind of slow," Hampton said. "Then we started to pick it up and were doing pretty well by halftime."

Hampton led Modesto Christian with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Teammate Hoku Faiapau added six points, five rebounds and five steals.

Enterprise dominated the glass at both ends of the court, pulling down 41 rebounds to 27 for the Crusaders, with 19 of the 41 coming off of the offensive boards.

Modesto Christian played tough defense at times, racking up 15 steals. Following Faiapau's five steals were Stephanie Moore and Lucas with four each.
