America seems to take pride in giving voices to the voiceless children, unborn babies, the list goes on. Yet, we fail to give voices to those of us who cannot and will never speak: dogs.
We turn a blind eye to their mistreatment. We condone the fact that these animals are often living in unloving homes and sometimes are victims of abuse. We allow individuals, such as people down my street, to own dogs and cruelly leave them chained to a tree for the duration of their life.
We smack and yell at our dogs when they bark. We take these wonderful, loyal creatures into our homes, and assume an occasional biscuit and pat on the head will keep them satisfied. We leave them outside in the blistering heat of summer and cold winter rains. We would never entertain the thought of treating our kids in such a way.
