-- A confrontation with a defiant, knife-wielding parolee ended without violence Sunday morning, Modesto police said.

Officers responded about 11 a.m. to a report of a woman threatening to use a knife against people in the 800 block of Third Street.

Melissa Baldo, 45, initially refused to put down the weapon or to obey other commands, said Lt. Jolene Gonzalez. After "lengthy negotiations," Gonzalez said, Baldo dropped the weapon and was arrested.

The unnamed officers "showed great restraint considering the tense circumstances," Gonzalez said.

Baldo had been wanted on another weapons charge and was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
