Congratulations to the Modesto City Schools board on demonstrating that sports supersede citizenship (Feb. 26, Page A-1). What a wonderful message to send to a generation that already is so self-involved that few practice common courtesy to others, many have X-rated mouths, and plenty consider school obligations more of a punishment than a responsibility.

Of course, since we see how professional sports excuse all sorts of abhorrent conduct — say clobbering players for bounty — I guess we should not be surprised that the school board has adopted a similar rationale. After all, it's all about winning, right?

And by all means, approve R-rated films for viewing. I'm sure nudity and violence are mandatory to an informed education. It aligns perfectly with the board's decisions.
