50 YEARS AGO: The Solar Scene, a customized 1950 Mercury created by Modestan Gene Winfield, was the Oakland Grand National Roadster Show sweepstakes winner. The car would be displayed at the state championship auto show scheduled for March at the old Helm Chevrolet garage at 11th and K streets in downtown Modesto. — Karen Aiello
