SONORA -- Sonora police arrested a 77-year-old man an officer found him riding a motorized shopping cart down the street.
According to police, the incident occurred just before 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of Mono Way.
An officer saw the Safeway cart and recognized the man riding it as John Mathews of Columbia.
Police said Mathews said the grocery store had given him the cart because he has trouble walking. Police contacted Safeway employees, who said they hadn't given Mathews the cart and didn't know it was missing.
Officers arrested Mathews and booked him at the Tuolumne County Jail on a charge of possession of stolen property.
The cart, valued at $1,000, was returned to Safeway.
