MODESTO -- A man who lives just northeast of Modesto heard noises at his front door Wednesday morning. When he went to investigate, authorities said, two men attacked him and rushed into the house.
An intense search for the attackers ensued, with authorities cordoning off a wide area and locking down Enochs High School for the second day in a row.
According to Stanislaus County sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Bejaran, the incident occurred just after 7 a.m. in the 4100 block of Roselle Avenue. The man opened his front door to find two white men, one dressed in a hooded sweat shirt, standing there.
"One pulled a gun," Bejaran said. "The other suspect hit the victim with an unknown object."
The man, who suffered upper-body injuries, managed to run away and flag down a passer-by on Roselle, who called authorities. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening.
Officers surrounded the home and began a systematic search of the house and surrounding property. They were unable to find the assailants.
Police locked down Enochs as they searched the area. The lockdown began about 7:35 a.m. and was lifted at 9:40 a.m., when students were cleared to return to classes.
Arriving students and parents were being diverted off campus as law enforcement secured the area.
Police termed the lockdown "precautionary"; there was no evidence the men had made their way to the campus. Students already on campus were locked inside rooms as officers worked the crime scene about a mile north of the school.
Tuesday, the school was locked down in the early afternoon after suspected auto thieves running from police went onto the campus. They were taken into custody in about 10 minutes.
