Over $1,000 raised for veterans

Modesto's U.S. Bowling Congress chapter raised $1,150 for the Bowlers to Veterans Link through the Friendship Doubles and BVL Qualifying tournaments.

Local bowlers could qualify for the BVL State Finals during league play last week and top scorers will represent Modesto at the State Finals on March 30 at Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park.

Dwayne Hunter won the men's Classic Division with his 837 series. Donnie Silva topped the men's A scoring at 654 and Derek Tull was the B winner at 661. Bill Irby won the C division at 584 Lance Stowe was tops in D at 459.

Karen Brown won the women's Classic with a 624 series. Janet Spooner won the A division at 559, with Crystal Walker tops in B at 556. Ieko Click had a 528 to take the C Division with spot, followed by Jean Rodrigues (521) in D and Debbie Carreira in E (459). Good luck to all the qualifiers at State.

A big thumbs up to Modesto USBC president Claudelle Bonaccinie for her year-round work in raising money for the vets.

The first squad of the USBC Senior City Doubles Tournament rolls Friday at McHenry Bowl at 1 p.m. Teams consist of those 55 and older with teams of any gender combination.

The first squads of the Modesto USBC City Tournament and the Modesto Youth Singles Tournament roll this weekend. The City team event is at McHenry starting Saturday at 12:30 and 4 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Doubles and singles roll at Yosemite at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Entry is $20 per event.

The youth event rolls at McHenry with the same squad times as the team event. The singles event has two divisions based on age plus a scratch event. The Ladies No-Tap Tournament rolls Monday at McHenry at 9:30.

Ann Zuidema, Anja DeBoer and Eric Benz won the Mixed Kegler Trio Tournament at McHenry last week at 2,503. The team that won for four consecutive months — Ken Thomas, Bre Sandoval and Rick Lazaro — had to settle for second with a 2,456. Thomas led his team with an 855 set and Lazaro threw in an 825, both with no-tap 300s. In third were Claude Ham, Fritz Klatt and David Brown (2,277).

It was a good day for the Mount family at the McHenry No-Tap Tournament last Friday. Glenn topped the men's list at 1,038, the highest total in memory for this tourney. Mary was no slouch, topping the women's list at 834. Gary Pattee was second on the men's list at 921, with two no-tap 300s, and Dennis McKinney was third (880). Jean Rodrigues was second among the ladies (794) and Beth Sims (791) third.
