JAMESTOWN -- A section of Highway 108 a few miles west of Jamestown in Tuolumne County remained closed this morning as crews continued to remove soil contaminated by gasoline after a tanker trunk jackknifed and overturned about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Detours are in place.
The California Highway Patrol had expected to reopen the road by Wednesday evening, but CHP officer Jamie Pullen said today it is taking crews longer than expected to remove the contaminated soil. Pullen did not have an estimate for when the work would be completed.
But he said officials were considering putting up temporary concrete barriers along the highway’s eastbound shoulder and reopening the highway while crews continue to remove the soil.
The CHP initially reported that the eastbound tanker truck spilled about 1,000 gallons of gasoline when it overturned. But Pullen said when workers righted the tanker truck they found an additional 200 gallons pooled under the big rig.
The truck was towed away after the remaining fuel in its two tanks was transfered to another tankeer truck.
The single-vehicle accident occurred just west of the Highway 49 turnoff. The driver was not injured. The CHP says the driver was traveling too fast for the conditions. The road was slick because of a low-moving, Tuesday afternoon snowstorm that dumped a few inches of snow in downtown Sonora and much more snow at higher elevations.
