Salida's Jim Gauthier came on strong in his last two games of qualifying in the Scratch 6-Gamer at Yosemite, earning the top seed for the stepladder finals.
At 102-over his first four qualifying games, he rolled a 277-259 to jump to the top spot at 236-over total. Gauthier waited in the wings until the final stepladder match to defeat Modesto's Mikey Acosta for the title, the $268 prize and a berth in the year-end Tournament of Champions.
Acosta had been the second qualifier at plus-221.
Tricia Norris was the high scorer overall in the 55 and Over No-Tap at Yosemite. She rolled a 930 set that included a no-tap 300. Linda David was a distant second at 838 with Sharon Moore in third at 814. Elvin Ghan topped the men's list at 913 followed by Harold Walker (850) and David Brown (842).
League bowlers should consider bowling in the City Tournament for a chance to make a little extra money and have a lot of fun. The tournament rolls the first two weekends of March with team events at McHenry and doubles and singles at Yosemite. Entry is $20 per event.
Youth and senior league bowlers have their own city tournaments. The Youth City Singles Tournament will run concurrently with the City Tournament in March at McHenry. There are two divisions based on age and a scratch event. For bowlers 55 and older, the Modesto USBC Senior City Doubles Tournament will roll the first two Fridays of March at McHenry. Squads are at 1 p.m. Teams can be any mix of men and women.
The Kegler Mixed Trio Tournament rolls Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at McHenry. Come with friends or alone and be placed on a team.
The McHenry Senior No-Tap Tournament runs Friday at 1 p.m.
The USBC Masters, which dates back to 1951, airs on ESPN Sunday. The USBC Masters began as an invitational to showcase national and local bowling stars and has grown in popularity over the years. Today it is regarded as one of the PBA's majors. Amateurs can enter the Masters as long as they have averaged 190 or higher for 21 games during the past two seasons.
Entrants hail from all 50 states and several foreign countries. They bowl 15 qualifying games before the field is cut to 63 for a double-elimination match-play bracket. The top five remaining players compete in the two-hour finals. It should be on TV at 10 a.m.
Who couldn't use some help with college costs? The Modesto USBC offers the Hall of Fame and Director's scholarships. Applications must be returned by April 15.
