The importance of mentors

February 14, 2013

Nothing could have heartened my dreary morning more than reading an article like "Adult mentors raise kids' spirits at Modesto school" (Feb. 6).

Being thrust into the puzzling world of youth, left to navigate oneself amid a thorny entanglement of good and bad, is not easy. That's why it's so refreshing to learn that there are still devoted mentors serving as glowing beacons to illuminate the right path.

I can only hope those young students feel a lasting sense of empowerment by the thought that a community cares.
