— A Turlock man appeared in Stanislaus County Superior Court on Monday afternoon for the first time since his arrest on suspicion of sexually abusing a teenage girl.

Robert Daniel Gomes, 33, has been charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, sodomy, oral copulation with a person younger than 14 and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger.

Turlock police Sgt. Stephen Webb said Gomes was arrested Friday evening. Earlier that day, detectives learned of the alleged abuse. The alleged victim, who was known to Gomes, was 13 when she says the abuse started and is now 16.

"She eventually told her mother, and that's how it came to light," Webb said.

A criminal complaint filed in court Monday alleges that the sexual misconduct with the victim, identified as "Jane Doe," occurred from December 2009 through Wednesday.

On Monday, the defendant entered the courtroom wearing an orange and white inmate jumpsuit and shackles on his wrists and ankles. Gomes told the judge that he read the criminal complaint and understood the charges alleged against him.

He did not yet have an attorney, so he did not enter a plea. The judge postponed his arraignment until Feb. 19. Gomes told the judge that his family was trying to retain a private attorney to represent him.

When Gomes was booked at Stanislaus County Jail, his bail initially was set at $500,000. Judge Susan Siefkin, however, reduced his bail to $300,000, which she said is the scheduled amount for his charges. A prosecutor from the district attorney's office was not at Monday's hearing.

Webb said detectives have not been made aware of other victims, but the investigation continues.

Investigators ask anyone with information on other possible victims or the case to call Detective Timothy Redd 668-5550, ext. 6625.
