Compare car laws to guns

Consider the case of regulations on automobiles:

The number of traffic deaths nationally in 1968 was 52,725; for 2011, it was 32,397. Regulations put in place included seat belt use, federal crash safety requirements, insurance company rules and fuel economy standards.

What if guns had to be registered and insured, with unsafe shooters penalized and 30-shot clips outlawed (no more bullet-guzzling Bushmasters)? We could cut gun deaths dramatically and still sell lots of guns, but regulate their safe use a little.
