A recent letter writer expressed how upset they were over taxpayers' money paying for our president's inauguration. I worked as a volunteer for the 2013 Presidential Inauguration Committee and want to assure you that the only event that taxpayers' money was used for was the oath of office, which has been a tradition for more than 100 years.
Other than the swearing-in ceremony, events and festivities associated with a presidential inauguration are not government functions and are not paid for with taxpayer money.
Presidential inaugural committees raise money from private donors to hold these events. The 2013 PIC raised so much money that very little of taxpayers' money had to be coughed up for the actual inauguration (swearing in of the president and vice president).
I would be upset, too, if taxpayers were paying for this celebration, which I was honored to be an intricate part of. It was a blast.
