Pregnant woman arrested in downtown Modesto burglary

Police overnight arrested a pregnant woman they said committed at least two burglaries.

Officers found Jessica Stephens, 23, inside an office in the 1000 block of 14th Street. She apparently had broken in to steal items from the office, Modesto Police Lt. Jolene Gonzales said.

Police took her into custody, and later tied her to a vehicle burglary earlier in the shift, Gonzales said.

“We’re starting to see more and more women involved in crime,” said Gonzales, who has been with the department for nearly 30 years. “That hasn’t been the norm.”
