-- The Bowlers to Veterans Link started 71 years ago during World War II when bowlers decided to support the troops in a different way.

One of the first BVL projects was to buy a medical evacuation airplane to bring the wounded home from the battlefields to begin their recuperation.

Now the BVL takes a leadership role in providing recreational therapy for the nation's veterans.

It's still going strong. So this week when you're asked to donate $1 to qualify for the 2013 California BVL Tournament, you'll know you're supporting a good cause. That dollar allows your league scores to be used for the tournament standings. Winners of the six women's divisions and five men's divisions will represent Modesto in the State BVL roll-offs. The finals will be March 30 at Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park.

Those BVL dollars add up. They've been used to buy sports equipment, arts and crafts supplies, pet therapy activities, games, music, drama, dance and community outings throughout the nation. You can always give more than the dollar if you want.

The team of Anja DeBoer, Sandy Pastorelli and Angie Bosio walked away with the Ladies Trio Tournament at McHenry with a score of 2,330. Bosio was tops at 697 with Denise Stucker, Sally Levesque and Lori Spani second (2,311) and Laverne Howe, Fran Lockwood and Betty Gerritsen third (2,300).

The Ladies Luncheon Sweeper will roll at Yosemite starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday with tournament scoring and a potluck.

It's time for the Sweetheart Doubles No-Tap Tournament at McHenry. Doubles teams of a man and woman roll at 1 p.m. Friday, after the potluck lunch.

The Modesto USBC City Tournament runs the weekends of March 2-3 and 9-10. Team events are at McHenry and doubles and singles at Yosemite. There will be two squads each day at each location. The tournament has four different team events — scratch, men, women and mixed. The scratch, men and mixed teams have five-person teams. The women's event has four bowlers per team. Doubles will have three prize lists. Entry is $20 per event.

The Modesto USBC Senior City Doubles Tournament is at McHenry Bowl, rolling March 1 and March 8. Entrants must be 55 or older and bowl in a Modesto league. Teams can be all men, all women or mixed. Bowlers can bowl twice but with different partners.

The PBA comes to Northern California April 12-14 for the Earl Anthony Memorial PBA Open at Dublin Bowl. There's a Junior & Senior Pro-Am on April 12 and an Adult Pro-Am on April 13.
