10 YEARS AGO: Modesto native Maj. Joseph Simile received the Distinguished Flying Cross, one of the highest honors that can be awarded to military pilots, during a ceremony held in Texas. Simile earned the honor for a life-and-death proposition that involved dodging four enemy surface-to-air missiles.
