Roberts, Johnson each score 18 to pace MJC women's hoops

-- Camille Roberts and Jode Johnson each scored 18 points to help lift the Modesto Junior College women's basketball team to a 69-63 victory over American River College in Big 8 Conference play Friday.

Roberts and Lexy Posz each hit a 3-pointer in the final three minutes of the game and Johnson made two jumpers in the final minute to seal the win for the Pirates (15-7, 4-4 Big 8).

"We were in foul trouble early," coach Mike Girardi said. "Three of our starters finished the game with four fouls. We had a really good last five minutes. It was a really good team effort."

• ARC MEN 80, MJC 75, at Sacramento — Tashawn Mabry led four Pirates in double figures with 21 points.

Coach Paul Brogan said the Pirates didn't match up well with the Beavers, but they came closer than their first meeting, a 74-52 ARC win on Jan. 8.

Baseball

• CSUS 6, W. OREGON 5 (10), at Turlock — Justin Charles went 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs, including the game-winning run in the 10th inning for the Warriors.

Charles, a senior transfer from Fresno State, singled to drive in Colt McLaughlin for the win. Klayton Miller was 3-for-5 with a double and triple. Craig Beevers and Ross Gonsalves each had two hits and scored a run.

Pitcher David Snapp got the victory in the walk-off with 1ª innings in relief. Western Oregon's Kody Stone took the loss.

The three-game series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Warrior Baseball Field.

• SHASTA 2, MJC 1, at Modesto — Despite outhitting the Knights 8-5, Modesto lost its season opener, stranding 10 runners. Patrick Mulry went 3 for 5 and Gino Franceschetti doubled for the Pirates.

Tennis

• CHABOT 6, MJC 3, at Modesto — Esteban Felix and Freddie Mathews scored singles victories for the Pirates, and Mathews teamed with Rick Peoloso for a doubles win.

Swimming

• MJC SWEEPS, at Livermore — The Pirate men beat host Las Positas 84-67 in their first meet of the season. The Pirate women's score was closer, a 78-72 victory.

Softball

• SAN MATEO 8, MJC 0, at Modesto — Mady Adams kept Modesto from being no-hit in their season opener.
