MODESTO -- A Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy apparently ignored a warning to be “very cautious” the day before he and a locksmith were shot and killed April 12 during an eviction.
The warning said resident James Ferrario was likely to be armed and suggested he might have bombs in his Modesto town home.
The information was contained in an independent report released Friday night by the Sheriff’s Department.
Deputy Bob Paris and locksmith Glendon Engert were killed by Ferrario shortly after trying to drill through a lock on the front door of the two-story Chrysler Drive residence.
A second deputy returned fire, but was not wounded. Ferrario held authorities at bay for more than 10 hours, at one point telling a 911 operator that “I just started shooting them” because he thought the men were burglars.
He had more than 30 weapons positioned throughout his home and the three others in the fourplex because he had broken through multiple interior walls. He also had a gas mask and had set up barricades in the home.
Ferrario committed suicide sometime after the home caught fire about 9:15 p.m. The fourplex burned to the ground.
