-- Hanshaw Middle School in south Modesto will hold a parent conference Saturday designed to encourage their involvement in their children's education.

All parents of children in kindergarten through high school are invited to attend the event organized by Modesto City Schools.

Keynote speaker Froilan Mariscal, an investigator with the Stanislaus County district attorney's office who grew up in south Modesto, will tell how education changed his life.

There will be several workshops on topics that include college readiness and financial aid, health, gang awareness, drug prevention and family financial planning.

The event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and parents can check in at the school's cafeteria at 1725 Las Vegas St.
