The Hughson City Council will meet Thursday night to interview five people who have applied to fill half of a four-year council term.
Matt Beekman's seat became available after he was elected mayor in November. The council decided to appoint a successor rather than hold a costly special election.
Five people, including a former candidate and current Planning Commission member, applied.
Councilman Jeramy Young said the applicants will draw numbers to determine the order in which they will be interviewed.
Candidates will have to wait outside the council chamber while their counterparts are interviewed, and all will be asked the same questions, Young said.
At the end of the meeting, the council will appoint a new member, who will be sworn in at the next meeting on Monday.
Thursday's meeting will start at 6 p.m. with a closed-session item; interviews will follow. The City Council chamber is at 7018 Pine St.
