-- A Sonora man taken into custody on drug possession charges tried to get his methamphetamine back on Tuesday, police said.

According to a news release, the incident started at 1:24 p.m. when an officer tried to stop a 1996 Toyota Camry with a brake light out in the 100 block of Columbia Way.

The driver, identified as Rick Burgess, 24, showed signs of being under the influence, police said. Officers placed Burgess in handcuffs, then searched his property and found a bindle of methamphetamine.

Officers put the bindle with some other belongings of Burgess on the truck of the Toyota.

As officers walked Burgess to a patrol car, he tried to jump on the trunk of the car and grab his methamphetamine, police said. When he couldn’t get it, he jumped off the car and tried to run away. Police restrained him and put him into the patrol car.

He was booked into the Tuolumne County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance, being under the influence of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of a controlled substance and obstructing an officer.
