-- A new restaurant in Ceres specializes in gyros — hence the name, Jabou Gyros — but owner Tony Jabou said his place also offers Middle Eastern, American and even German food.

Tony and Jarmen Jabou opened Jabou Gyros about two months ago at 2531 Whitmore Ave. The menu features typical Greek and Middle Eastern fare, including beef kebabs and falafel, alongside burgers, hot dogs and even a Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Tony Jabou said the best seller depends on the day.

The long-awaited Super Wal-Mart store in Patterson officially opens Wednesday. Store representatives said a grand opening ceremony is set for 7:30 a.m. The store, which brought more than 300 full- and part-time jobs to the area, will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily.

"The city of Patterson is pleased to welcome Wal-Mart to our community," Mayor Luis Molina said in a news release. "Not only will Wal-Mart create much-needed jobs, but it will also provide greater shopping choices for Patterson residents, ensuring our sales tax dollars stay local to support critical city services that residents rely on."

Kid Time Fitness Co. has been expanding since it started in Ceres in 2010. Owner Tanaia Green said the recreational fitness business started by offering classes at the Ceres Community Center. Kid Time then opened facilities in Turlock and Modesto; the studio in Turlock has since closed, but Green's staff still runs classes through the city's Parks and Recreation Department, as well as in Escalon and Ceres.

"We're a little bit of everywhere," Green said. Classes include gymnastics, ballet, hip-hop dance and cheerleading, as well as baby sign language. Most fitness classes are aimed at children from walking age to 12 years old.

The Modesto studio, at 3217 Tully Road, is open Monday through Thursday afternoons and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon. It held a grand reopening Saturday to show off new equipment and classes. But Green said families are invited to stop by any time to check out the facility and the programs it offers.
