-- After back-to-back armed bank robberies in Modesto on Friday, a man is in custody on suspicion of committing both.

The first robbery occurred at the Farmers & Merchants Bank at 3001 McHenry Ave. about 1:30 p.m.

The suspect entered the bank brandishing a shotgun and demanding money, said Modesto police Sgt. Ivan Valencia.

He fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. About 90 minutes later, the BBVA Compass bank at 2601 Oakdale Road was robbed by a man, armed with a shotgun, who matched the description of the robber from the Farmers & Merchants Bank.

The suspect in both cases wore a dark-colored spandex mask, Valencia said.

Through the course of their investigation, officers tracked the suspect to southeast Modesto, where he was stopped on his motorcycle at Edgebrook Drive and Recie Court.

Valencia said the man was in possession of a shotgun and cash believed to be from the banks. He also was identified by bank employees.

Anthony Fuerst, 51, of Modesto, was arrested on suspicion of robbery. Valencia said he had a strange demeanor for a person being arrested: very "nonchalant."
