Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson, who is prone to passionate outbursts, has joined the hyperbolic chorus against any change in federal gun laws with the astounding statement that he won't enforce laws he considers useless.
Christianson claimed he was forced to offer a public statement on this issue. Nonsense. He's up for re-election in 2014 and he jumped into this fray because he wanted to.
We support the Second Amendment and the right of law-abiding people to own guns. We also believe there needs to be a reasonable debate about the types of weapons available to the average citizen and ways to keep them out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. Some want that discussion. Others misrepresent the situation by claiming the president and other Democrats want to ban all gun ownership. That's just not true, as a reading of the president's plan released Thursday clearly shows.
Voters elected Christianson to uphold public safety not to pick and choose those laws he would enforce based on his personal or political ideology. While everyone is entitled to an opinion on gun issues and the sheriff is certainly an authority on the topic we would expect that if he is weighing in at all on federal laws, it would be to add meaningful comment, rather than just more rhetoric.
