MODESTO -- Stanislaus County sheriff's detectives are trying to unravel a mystery that left a seriously injured man on the side of the road in south Modesto.
The California Highway Patrol originally recorded a hit-and-run accident in the 600 block of South Seventh Street on Wednesday morning. But the sheriff's office has taken over the case and investigators aren't sure exactly what happened.
They do know that a 53-year-old man was left with multiple injuries about 10 a.m. Wednesday and taken to a hospital.
According to a news release, investigators "are trying to determine how the male was injured and how he ended up on the side of the road. They have limited information regarding the circumstances of the male's injuries and are seeking help from the community to assist them in their investigation."
That's pretty much all authorities know, Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said.
"At this point, the victim isn't speaking," said Bejaran. Authorities are hoping the man will have recovered enough by today to talk with detectives.
In the meantime, investigators planned to talk with the man's family. Although they have established his identity, Bejaran said detectives aren't releasing it.
"He is from Modesto," Bejaran said. It's not yet clear what the man was doing on South Seventh Street or if he lives in the immediate area.
