MODESTO -- Jack Frost's nights of creating icy artwork in these parts should be almost over.
Tonight's low is expected to be 31, then the forecast for the Modesto area calls for a low of 34 through Saturday, in contrast to the upper 20s we've experienced of late. A clear sky will continue after morning fog the next couple of days, and highs will go from the low to upper 50s. Tuesday, the high temperature recorded by the Modesto Irrigation District was 55, just a degree above the historic average temperature for Jan. 15.
Icicles formed a roadside attraction Monday morning along Highway 132 two miles west of La Grange. In Modesto, frost had yet to melt from the leaves of plants on Fine Avenue on Tuesday morning. And on Fine, near Sanders Elementary School, Wayne and Dorothy Donahue bundled against the cold as they take their morning walk.
