-- How does this garden grow? With a lot of tender, loving care from Modesto Garden Club members.

Tuesday morning, club members were working on the rose bushes along the Virginia Corridor bike and walking trail near Orangeburg Avenue.

The club has many ongoing civic projects, including downtown beautification, the garden clock outside Centre Plaza, the victims garden at the Stanislaus County Courthouse, flower beds at the base of the Modesto arch, the memorial garden at the club's office, dedicated to members who have died, and 44 self-watering, hanging baskets downtown.

The Modesto Garden Club, which has been around for 85 years, has more than 500 members and became the largest garden club in the state in 1996.
