-- Turlock police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for a deadly hit-and-run accident two months ago.

Police arrested Jose Jesus Aguilar, 19, of Delhi on Sunday evening at a home in the 500 block of Angelus Street. According to police, Aguilar tried to hide in a closet.

The home where Aguilar was arrested is only a few blocks from the Nov. 3 crash that killed Taylor Vessel, 18, of Delhi.

Officers had been looking for Aguilar since last year, after identifying him through surveillance video taken at a convenience store earlier on the night of the crash.

Police said they believe he was driving a Chevrolet Malibu that left a Marshall Street parking lot as a police officer entered it in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, then sped along Lander Avenue.

The driver lost control of the car, which spun, hit a tree and came to rest against a house on Lander. Vessel was partially ejected and died within minutes, police said.

The driver, believed to be Aguilar, ran away. Police contacted the woman who owns the car, but they said she and other witnesses were not forthcoming.

Aguilar was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on a charge of vehicular manslaughter. His bail was set at $60,000.
