When a deranged individual does an unspeakable act such as the senseless shooting at an elementary school, we often feel powerless to understand what is happening to our society.

Instead of participating in a rational discourse regarding the control of weapons designed to kill multiple people in a very short time, the National Rifle Association doubles down on its support of assault weapons and suggests arming teachers or stationing armed guards in front of schools.

This is utter nonsense. These type of actions result in promoting fear. The blowback effect would be much worse than the supposed cure.

Do not promote fear in your children. Shield them from adult information they cannot process, but do not lie to them. Talk with them in a child's language if they have questions. It's OK not to have all the answers. Bottom line: Reassure children that their school is safe and that they are safe at school.
