I am responding to the Jan. 4 letter "Hunting with dogs is sick." I grew up in Alabama where hunting animals with dogs was considered a sport.
An owner would have more than one hunting dog. Fox hunting was the greatest sport. The owner would take his dogs out after dark to find and chase the fox up the tree. The owner could determine which dog was in the lead by the dog's bark. The mother fox always led the dogs away from her babies. When the fox went up into the tree, the dogs would stand at the bottom of the tree and howl. They had accomplished their goal. The owner then praises the dogs and they stop howling. They get back into the pickup or trailer and go home. The hunt is over. Then the mother fox comes down from the tree and goes back to her babies.
Do I consider this sick? Indeed I do!
